The Orlando Magic have signed free agent guard/forward Quentin Richardson, General Manager Otis Smith announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal are not disclosed.

“Quentin (Richardson) is a solid perimeter defender and brings an element of toughness,” said Smith. “At the same time, he also is a tremendous shooter from long range, which fits our style of play very well. We’re excited to add him to our team.”

Richardson (#5, 6’6”, 228, 4/13/80) played in 76 games (75 starts) last season with Miami, averaging 8.9 ppg., 4.9 rpg. and 1.2 apg. in 27.4 minpg. He also appeared in five postseason contests, averaging 9.8 ppg., 3.8 rpg., 1.6 apg. and 1.60 stlpg. in 29.8 minpg. Richardson shot a team-best .397 (142-358) from three-point range, which tied for 21st in the NBA. He scored in double figures 28 times and had seven 20-point outings, including a season-high 25 points on Mar. 4 vs. the L.A. Lakers. Richardson led (or tied) the team in scoring once, in rebounding 12 times and in assists once.

It’s official.

Yeah, I'm a skeptic I guess. When it comes to my teams I feel the need to protect myself from expectations. I don't buy into products until I can see them in the flesh. Your analysis was excellent and, like I said, I love being wrong about these things. I may doubt the pick up but I'm going to be rooting for it to work! I want Q to succeed here, no doubt.

@Will

You doubt things way too much, in my opinion.

Oh, I read it. I'm just speaking from a personal basis from having watched him night in and night out here in Phoenix is all. Sometimes you get a vibe and, indeed, the stats lie sometimes. Q is a fine player, no doubt, but having watched him I'm not sure he fits with the Magic in terms of the intensity, effort, and defense they are dedicated to. Granted, my sample of evidence is from ONE year of Phoenix basketball which was 5 seasons ago. I can't say I was exactly dedicated to watching him in New York or Miami. I told you I'd be happy to be wrong but just because you wrote that it's a great pickup and told me its a good pickup doesn't mean its true. Lets see what happens. . .I'm more then happy to have egg on my face when it comes to the Magic.

... as long as Richardson can stay healthy and keep his weight down.

@Will

Did you read what I wrote about him? It doesn't look like you did, because this is an upgrade for the Magic.

Assuming Redick returns, there wouldn't be enough playing time for Barnes to make it worthwhile bringing him back.

@Shannon “Chief” Cherry

Yes, Richardson's history with Pierces goes WAY back.

I love the signing. I think he is a decent upgrade over Barnes' offense, and about the same on D. I like that he has history with Pierce too!

I currently live in Phoenix and I watched Q here for a few years every night on TV. NOT a good pickup in my humble opinion. I don't have the raw stats in front of me to back any of this up of course (do I ever, haha), but the memories that come flooding back are a)incredibly streaky, b)boneheaded, c)flash and not substance, and d)completely dissapears in the playoffs (at least when he was on the Suns).

Granted, his defense was never tested in Phoenix since, in those days, the Suns scored 780 ppg but allowed 770 so. . .I don't know enough about his post-Phoenix days to comment on that.

In my opinion, this is a lateral, if not backwards, aquisition. Just my opinion. . .hopefully he'll prove me wrong. I'd be happy to be wrong about it. . .

Incredible move Otis. Hard not to like it. Sure scoring threat and defensive agent with hopefully miles left to go in the tank.
